On Tuesday, Rand Paul delivered his first major speech since his plagiarism scandal broke, and in a passive-aggressive nod to his critics, his prepared remarks included 33 footnotes, with citations for everything from Ronald Reagan’s first inaugural address to legislation the senator sponsored. However, the text still wouldn’t pass muster as a college paper. The Daily Beast notes that the foreign policy address at the Citadel included a number of inaccuracies and half-truths, from the Obama administration sending F-16 fighter jets and Abrams tanks to Egypt (such items were withheld after the military took control of Egypt’s government) to “arming al-Qaeda” in Syria (the U.S. is legally prohibited from doing so). It’s not all that surprising, considering a day earlier Paul was railing against an imaginary doughnut ban. The haters can force him to use footnotes, but they’ll never take away his truthiness.
